Tips for learning martial arts at home — what actually works?

Hey everyone! Lately I’ve been itching to start learning some martial arts, but the gym near me is pretty expensive and my schedule’s always packed. I’ve been watching random YouTube clips, but I’m not sure if I’m doing things right or just… flailing 😅 I found this article with some actually solid tips on how to learn martial arts at home — like focusing on basics, setting goals, and creating a practice routine: https://speak-mma.com/blog/how-to-learn-martial-arts-at-home-6-tips/. It got me thinking that maybe I can build some good habits even without a dojo — but I’d love to hear from folks who’ve tried this. How did you start, and did training at home actually help?

Awesome topic! I’ve dabbled in martial arts here and there, and one thing I found helpful when practicing at home was breaking skills into tiny parts. Instead of trying a full combo, I’d isolate a move and repeat it slowly until it felt smooth. Also had a foam mat and a mirror so I could see my form and correct mistakes — nothing fancy, but it made me way more aware of what I was doing. And honestly, just enjoying the little improvements kept me going.
